Despite being played as a demonstration sport during the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, basketball didn't become an official Olympic sport until the Berlin Games in 1936, 45 years after the game was invented by Canadian James Naismith. Basketball wasn't added as an Olympic women's sport until the Montreal Games in 1976. The United States defeated Canada in the first men's gold medal game in 1936, and the US has since won 14 of 18 Olympic gold medals as well as two bronze and one silver medal. The only Olympics in which the US didn't medal was the Moscow Games in 1980, which the US didn't attend in protest of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. Carmelo Anthony is the most decorated Olympian in the sport, winning one bronze and three gold medals. The American women have enjoyed similar dominance in basketball since the Montreal Games in 1976, winning eight of 11 possible gold medals. Teresa Edwards holds the record for most Olympic medals in the sport, with four gold and one bronze.
